What is new?
Design
The design is completely different from the previous iPhone 11. It is flat, I mean truly flat and it is a very decent looking design, pretty cool to be honest. The display comes with a more protective Ceramic Shield front which is noticeably more scratch resistant than the previous ones.
5G
5G is another thing that Apple used to boast about. But you should know there are plenty of flagship devices which supports the 5G technology very well. Nonetheless, the developers of Apple introduced a new technology called Smart Data Mode just because turning on 5G tends to consume too much battery life. In this mode, when you use your iPhone 12 for browsing, the connection will automatically switch between 4G LTE and 5G mode. If you are doing something heavy; like downloading, video calling, uploading something, the phone will switch to 5G and you can have the best possible experience. Then if you are doing something normal like browsing through news, reading some articles, the phone will automatically switch to the 4G mode because it is just enough for what you are doing. That’s a pretty good way to stop 5G from eating up your battery life.
Performance
The performances of the iPhones are always remarkable. 4GB of System RAM and the latest A14 Bionic chip will help you to fasten up your things. Switching among apps, opening camera, taking a photo is smoother than ever. When looking at the battery life, you are going to be bit disappointed. iPhone 12 comes with a more brightened and very high resolution 60Hz display, and obviously it will cause battery to drain quicker than the previous iPhone 11. Also as I’ve mentioned before, the 5G connectivity will consume the battery more than the 4G LTE connection.
Interface
The interface is more updated than before with the latest iOS 14. Finally, Apple mobile phone users can use widgets on their phones. It is actually amazing but only for Apple users because it is very old feature when it comes to the Android.
Camera
The quality of the camera is very impressive in Apple iPhones. The iPhone 12 provides a 12MP very powerful camera to do HDR video recordings with Dolby Vision up to 30 fps (and 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps). Without a doubt, the camera is simply amazing, very detailed, much colourful and clear. Lowlight photography and night mode is considerably improved too. Apple iPhone 12 is the only device that is capable of recording HDR videos with the Dolby Vison technology. It is super awesome and kind of disappointing at the same time. When you watch those Dolby Vision videos on your own iPhone or on another iPhone, it will look incredible. But you can’t play Dolby Vison videos on several devices, and you can’t get the same quality from another non Dolby Vison supported devices.
What is missing?
The most controversial thing about the Apple iPhones is they don’t come with a charging wall adapter anymore. That is a huge disadvantage no matter what Apple says. Apple says they are trying to be eco-friendly by reducing the e-waste. Everyone has to buy a new wall adapter if Apple doesn’t send one. That doesn’t do any difference to the environment, just Apple getting rid of their cost.
Apple has introduced a new wireless charger called MagSafe, which actually is pretty cool. That MagSafe charger will tightly stick on to the Apple logo, but you can notice a slight round mark in the back of your iPhone after charging with the MagSafe charger. You don’t have to worry about it much because it can be wiped off easily and if you are using a case it is not a problem at all. In addition to that you can charge non Apple phones with the MagSafe charger too.
No matter what method you use to charge the phone, you still have to buy a USB-C type wall adapter.
What is to buy additionally?
Mainly the charger! You can’t do anything without a damn charger (Why? Apple Why??). So if you are looking to buy a new wall adapter I can recommend Spigen Power Arc 20W Fast Charger which costs about 20$. The plugs in the adapter is retractable and can be easily stored in a small space.
If you are going to use both direct and wireless charging methods, it is good to have another USB Type-C to Lightning cable nearby. I think Spigen DuraSync USB C to Lightning Cable can do the job.
The MagSafe charger is the best choice if you are looking for an Apple certified wireless charger. Even though this costs you nearly 40$ it will charge your phone at maximum 15W power which is less than the 20$ charger.
I’m going to suggest several types of phone cases in case you are curious.
Best Cases for Apple iPhone 12
- Ultra Hybrid
This is a transparent, crystal clear and smooth case. It has a good grip but unfortunately fingerprints will stick on the back of the case. It is too early for me to tell about the edges (if it gets yellow or not). Otherwise it is a good choice.
- Liquid Armor
This is the solution for the fingerprint problem. It’s completely black and covers the back of the phone entirely (except the camera and yes, the Apple logo will be covered). But it is very soft and smooth so definitely a good case. Comes with a shock absorption pattern in the inside of the case.
- Rugged Armor
Imaging the Liquid Armor case, but with a cut-out to show the Apple logo, textured top and carbon fiber bottom. Pretty much same soft, matte feeling and the same shock absorption pattern in the inside. This too will not attract your fingerprints.
- Neo Hybrid
This is bit different from the previous cases because it has a polycarbonate bumper around it. And the backside of the case is textured. The rest of the features are same as the previous ones.
- Tough Armor
With the air-cushioned inside and the kick stand in the back, this maybe the most useful case in this list. It is made of a separate layer of TPU and a layer of Polycarbonate. The kick stand is very useful and also will lock tightly when it is not in use so it won’t release from the case even when you shake the phone.
- Slim Armor CS
CS stands for Card Slot. This will help you to hold your license or credit card when you are not using a wallet. The inside is air-cushioned for shock absorption and is made of two layers, TPU and Polycarbonate.
So all these cases are wireless charging compatible. You don’t need to worry about that (you may have to remove any cards in the Slim Armor CS before using a wireless charger). And all these cases have raised edges to protect your display from scratches and dirt. All the cut-outs and buttons are crispy and smooth.
Finally, a screen protector!
Spigen Tempered Glass Screen Protector [Glas.tR EZ Fit]
This may be the best and the easiest to install screen protector for the Apple iPhone 12. The pack comes with two items. So all you have to do is wipe your iPhone display with a wet wipe real clean (comes with the item) and then wipe it using the cleaning cloth. Then remove the protective sticker from the frame and put your iPhone in it. It will fit in perfectly! Then turn it to the other side and do as the instructions say (press and slide enough times in the given direction). Wait for several minutes and remove the sticker and then remove the frame. Use the squeegee to remove any remaining air bubbles, peel the last sticker off and you are finished!
I think now you know enough about the Apple iPhone 12 and the accessories you need to buy with it. Honestly, it is a great device with some truly amazing features, but everything has its pros and cons. You just need to be aware of them. I hope I helped you to be a wise customer.
